GARY Ellis is being hailed as crown green bowling’s greatest-ever player.

Such is the Tonge star’s current domination of the sport, comparisons with bowling legends Brian Duncan and Noel Burrows are being made. Many of today’s tournament players believe Ellis is on the way to surpassing even their remarkable achievements.

Three-times Waterloo champion Ellis has won well over 100 major titles and at the weekend he added three more.

Among them was the All-England Merit at Owley Wood, Cheshire, where he came through a field containing 64 of the finest bowlers in the country to land the top prize of £1,200.

Having survived a 21-20 last-32 thriller against Mark Ferris, Ellis grew in stature, culminating in a 21-15 defeat of South Yorkshire star Chris Brown in the final.

Ellis’s ability to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat was never more evident than in the Elton Liberal Classic in Bury. Trailing rising star Jack Hargreaves 16-2 in the semi-finals, he refused to give in and was somehow able to grind out a 21-20 success.

That paved the way for the final against Shropshire’s Callum Wraight which Ellis won 21-12 for a £400 pay-out.

Most bowlers would have been exhausted after their weekend efforts – but not Ellis. He drove to Blackrod, near Bolton, where he showed his class by winning the Hilltops Social and Bowling Club Open and £500!
