A WERNETH quartet produced a repeat birdie blitz to retain the Oldham and District four-man team trophy.
Holders after a 17-under display at Crompton and Royton 12 months ago, the team of Clint Shaw, Gareth Hey, Liam Dwayre and Steve Lynch went two better on their home course to win by an impressive five shots.
It was two Stableford scores to count, with all players scoring on the eighth and 18th, Their 99-point tally proved too hot for Crompton and Royton’s Chris King, Paul King, Pete Brunton and Paul Darlington (94).
FORMER Brookdale assistant pro Grant Hamerton had to settle for joint second place in a Lancashire PGA Players’ Tour event at his home course of Pike Fold.
Hamerton shot an excellent 67 to finish alongside Chris Crowder (Lee Park) and Lee Collinson (Myerscough), but he could not get near winner Tom Davies’ stunning nine-under-par 62.
ROY Downing and Sheila Cooper teamed up to win the Millgate Trophy at Saddleworth.
Their score of 69 was just good enough to see off James Buckley and Glynis Jones (70), while card play-offs were needed to decide the next three.
SHAUN Dixon landed the Oldham Golf Club Championship with rounds of 72 and 71 for an aggregate score of 143 and a two-stroke victory.
Runner-up Lee Blainey returned rounds of 75 and 70 for 145, while Phil Docherty was third with 75 and 73 for 148.
BROOKDALE’S Charlie Clough defends the Centenary Trophy — the last of the season’s four Oldham and District Golf Association events entered by the five local clubs – at Saddleworth on Saturday.
