GOLF:
ASHTON captain Andy Lomas got off to an amazing eagle-eagle start on the way to his side booking their place in the Oldham and District League’s ‘A’ Section play-off final with a 5-3 win over Dukinfield.
Andy holed his shot with a pitching wedge from 100 yards at the first for an eagle two, and then drained a 250-yard three-wood for a second eagle on the next.
“It was amazing. We were seven up after nine holes. It would certainly have been a handy start to a medal round,” said Andy.
Ashton will have to wait to see who they meet to decide the title as the other semi-final has gone into extra-time.
Werneth did superbly to claim a 4-4 draw at West Division winners North Manchester, but bad light stopped the sudden death play-off at the second extra hole and the four players involved will return on Monday for what could be just one hole.
EUROPEAN Seniors Tour player and BBC golf analyst Andrew Murray has opened Crompton and Royton’s long-awaited new practice range.
Murray is fondly remembered for the emotional scenes which greeted his triumph at Walton Heath in 1989 when he overcame spondulitis to capture the European Open.
He now spends his time between the Seniors Tour, course designing and his work with the BBC.
The new range has been be named The Stuart Woodhead Practice Facility in memory of the player whose legacy helped in the development of facilities.
Stuart was a member at Crompton and Royton for many years.
