Wait over as Werneth bag title

GOLF:
WERNETH have won the ‘B’ Division for the first time in the 39-year history of the Oldham and District Golf League.
They drew 4-4 with Blackley in the play-off final at Ashton, but won a sudden-death play-off.
The extra point was secured by Ian Sutton and David Whaley — ironically after they had been beaten 3&1 in their match — after it was agreed to play the sudden-death between the first pairings out to avoid problems with fading light.
The Blackley pair both made bogey fours on the 18th while Quentin Cartwright made a difficult up and down over a bunker from the right-hand side of the green, and the title was Werneth’s.
“I can honestly say I have never been that nervous playing a golf shot in my life,” said Quentin. “It is great for our club to finally break the duck in this league as we were one of the founder members.”
The only time Werneth has figured previously in the ‘B’ Division was as runners-up in 1983.
WERNETH’S hopes of a league double were dashed when their ‘A’ team lost a sudden-death play-off at North Manchester. North will now face Ashton in the final.
DUKINFIELD have completed a cup double. With the ‘B’ Cup already in the bag, the ‘A’ team beat Blackley 3-2 in a close encounter at Saddleworth.
