ATHLETICS:
ORGANISER Brian Varley declared himself pleased with the turnout after a late flurry of entries in Oldham and Royton Harriers’ Joe Ashcroft Saddleworth 6.
The race, run in memory of former club president Joe (pictured) who passed away earlier this year, attracted 250 participants.
Bragging rights belonged to Salford Harriers, with Andy Jones winning the men’s category and club-mate Hailey Kuter taking top spot in the women’s group.
Brian said: “It was a successful event. I feared the worst this year because I expected numbers to be down.””
Royton Road Runners’ women performed well, with Debbie Fiddling first FV45 in 42:29 followed by Debbie Shaw in 43:20. June Allingan was second FV65 in 60:59.
In the men’s event, Royton’s Ian McBride earned a fifth-place finish in 32:54, Athletics ahead of Jones’ Salford team-mates. John Sweeney (45:40) and Bruce Whittam (39:11) are now the only two ever-presents in Royton’s club championship season.
