RUGBY:
OLDHAM St Anne’s may well be near the bottom of the National Conference League Division One table, but they gave leaders Hunslet Warriors a run for their money in a 36-20 away-day defeat.
Apart from a 10-minute spell halfway through the first half when Warriors notched up four quick tries, Saints matched them.
Saints applied all the early pressure and in the 12th minute were rewarded with a try when a smart pass from David Sweeney put Paul Garrett in for the first points of the game.
Warriors replied with those four quickfire tries, all of which were goaled.
Another smart pass from Saints’ Sweeney resulted in Sean Thomas crossing the line, Jordan Galloway converting.
Within minutes of the restart Saints continued where they left off, and from a scrum on the half-way line Jordan Hanley gathered the ball and weaved his way through defenders to cross.
Jordan Galloway added the extras and at 24-16 Saints were making good progress.
This was definitely the Oldham team’s best display of the campaign.
