BOWLS:
TONGE are four points clear at the top of the Manchester Premier League table with three games to go following their 9-6 (180-149) home victory over South Manchester RBL.
Jimmy Derby led the way with a 21-3 victory and there were also wins for Nicky Brooks (21-12), Matt Gillies (21-12), Darren Griffiths (21-10), Graham Hickey (21-12) and Gary Ellis (21-16).
St Joseph’s of Chorley, Tonge’s only rivals for the title, won 10-4.5 against the Lloyd Hotel, Chorlton.
THE Chadderton League merit qualifiers will be held on Thursday week, September 6 (6.45pm).
IT was sweet and sour for Friezland team-mates Lee Schofield and John Ashton in the qualifiers of the Solar Choice men’s singles at Norden last Sunday.
Schofield went out 21-20 to Bradford’s Mal Fowler, but Ashton reached the finals by the same score at the expense of Springbank’s Paul Heap. Heats continue on Sunday (6pm).
