Date published: 31 August 2012

PARALYMPICS: DIGGLE swimmer Ben Procter launched his bid for Paralympics glory today.

His London 2012 campaign with Great Britain got under way in the 100 metres backstroke. A successful

performance in the heats would result in an appearance in the final.

The 22-year-old honorary member of Saddleworth Swimming Club has learning difficulties.

He also competes in 200m freestyle on Sunday. Both events are in the S14 category.

Ben will be cheered on by friends and countless members of his family, including some from overseas.

Nyree Kindred, the wife of Oldham-educated swimmer Sascha Kindred, won Great Britain’s first medal in the pool.

She produced a personal best display and came second in the S6 100 metres backstroke, behind China's Lu Dong. Former Limeside resident Sascha and his wife have cerebral palsy.

He is looking to defend his gold medals in 100m breaststroke tomorrow and 200m individual medley on Monday.

GB’s Jonathan Fox clinched a gold medal in 100m backstroke S7 and cyclist Sarah Storey repeated the feat in the C5 3km individual pursuit.

Silvers went to Hannah Russell in 400m freestyle S12 and cyclist Mark Colbourne in C1-2-3 one-kilometre time trial.

Ben Quilter claimed bronze in the 60kg judo, as did Zoe Newson in 40kg power-lifting.
