OLDHAM boxer John Newell has been called up to a Great Britain training camp as the long, drawn out process of preparing for the next Olympic Games gets underway.
The 18-year-old former junior ABA champion has laeady been earmarked as a potential Rio squad member. He joins up with his GB team-mates in Sheffield on September 21.
His new coach Ben Lancaster, at the Boarshaw gym, said: “This initial training camp is a big opportunity for John to make a good impression.
“If he does, he could become a permanent squad member, which would mean living in Sheffield four days a week, training with GB and participating in tournaments.
“I am confident he will make his mark and be invited back.”
Newell recently switched to Boarshaw from Shaun Rafferty’s gym in Ancoats.
