Ness hits heights in hill climb

NESS Whitfield of Saddleworth Clarion was the first woman finisher in the Beard Cup hill climb.
The rider, in a field of 40 from both sexes, dug deep to record six minutes 19.1 seconds. She was fourth-fastest Saddleworth member behind Ben Gillespie (5:33.8), Simon Cullen (5:51.2) and Neil Warner (6:00.4).
Saddleworth finished third out of 11 clubs in the team event for the Beard Cup. The course, in Diggle, started from Sam Road and continued up Huddersfield Road.
A day earlier, Saddleworth Clarion riders took part in the National Clarion Road Race on a closed circuit around Darley Moor in Derbyshire. Cullen was fourth overall.
