STEVE Ashworth and Steve Crossley tied for first place in the King of the Valleys 10-a-side match fished on the canal at Dean Clough.

The Mayer NW duo caught a steady stream of decent stamp roach and quite a few smaller samples too.

Team-wise it was Ryburne Red that won the day with ex-England international Paul Hughes, Steve Clegg, Pete Dwyer, Derek Bowers, Darren Taylor and Mark Webb the stand-out side.

I managed 3lb 2oz and a top-six spot, with squatt and pinkie catching plenty of smaller roach and if I hadn’t had pike trouble in the second half of the match, I would have framed — instead I had to settle for a section win.

IN the second round of the Pennine Winter League it really was a ‘luck of the draw’ job for individuals and teams. Individually Nigel Storr (Trabrucco Halifax) claimed first place with a cracking 6lb 8oz of bread punch taken on roach, followed by Carl Hawthorne’s 5lb 12oz catch which fell to chopped worm.

Maver NW led the way in the teams, followed by Halifax Trabrucco, who now trail the former by 11 points.

STEVE Hall was top of the pile in the Todmorden AS members-only match on Croft Fishery, with his pole and pellet approach working well to the tune of 48lb 10oz.

Second was Pete Mottram on 24lb 8oz. Hall also took top spot in the latest Medlock Bridge AC open match on Park Lake with his two tench, skimmers, roach and two chub catch falling to chopped worm and caster fished at 10 metres. Peter Hill was second with a 14lb 2oz net.

TRI-CAST Highfield’s latest open match saw Mick Booth prevail with 63lb 10oz followed by Paul Banks (50lb 12oz) and High Heyes man Tony Peters (43lb 4oz).

JIM Wild was in fine form for the latest Lees and Hey AS match on Old Hough Fishery Upper Benbo Lake.

He used pellet up to a reedbed at seven metres, catching carp and ide weighing 2lb, followed by Steve Blackburn with meat and pellet at 14 metres accounting for 40lb 12oz of carp, ide and barbel.

Alan Steele came third with 29lb of carp and ide.
