Abbey's Niall Barnes takes the game to Legends Bar
FOOTBALL:
Abbey 2, Legends Bar 5
THE minnows of Abbey went out of the Midas Plumbing Oldham Sunday League Challenge Cup at the first round stage following defeat at the hands of Legends Bar at Clayton playing fields.
Abbey, from Division Three, were always rank outsiders against their experienced top-flight opposition, but they came from behind in an entertaining first half to shock Legends.
Legends player-secretary Rick Wild said afterwards Abbey’s players and officials “played the game the right way and showed lots of potential."
In atrocious conditions, Abbey pegged back Legends during that first period with a Christian McKenzie header at the far post from a Liam Jackson corner kick.
But Wild and his team enjoyed the conditions and he added: "It was a proper game of football in proper conditions and all the Legends players came off at the end and said how much they had enjoyed it, despite the weather."
Leighton Stephenson bagged a hat-trick for Legends, but it was Chris Pauley's intelligent play in the centre of the field that caught the eye. Niall Barnes fired home from 18 yards late on.
