CROMPTON and Royton’s Steve Moores and Andy Allen produced a superb display to win the Northern Matchplay pairs title at Formby Golf Club – and book themselves on a flight to Spain.
They defeated Julian McInerney and Gary Hible (Hesketh) on the 18th hole to win the regional final and qualify for the grand final at Arcos Gardens, Spain.
STAMFORD pulled off a surprise when they claimed the Brian Atack team trophy at the Oldham and District Golf League’s end-of-season tournament at Dukinfield.
For the second year running the home-club favourites were ousted – Brookdale won at North Manchester in 2011.
This time Stamford totalled 121 with their 42, 41, 38 best-three scores to beat North by two, with Dukinfield and Ashton third and fourth on 118 and 117.
North claimed the top prize in the better-ball Stableford through Ryan Bradley and Mark Forster with 43 points.
Ashton 'A' captain Andy Lomas and partner Steve McGee took second with 42 on a card play-off against Stamford's Tony McClusky and Tony Bowden.
