New boys make mark for Higgy

RUGBY:
HIGGINSHAW, fielding a clutch of new signings, were disappointed by a 42-16 defeat by Irlam Steel in the North-West Counties League.
Jordan White, Callum Leigh, Laurence Girvan, Kendal Davies and Anthony Sweeney made their debuts on Oldham Edge, while Ryan O’Donnell returned to the ranks.
They set the standard with enthusiastic displays, but were unable to prevent their side from slipping to a first loss of the season.
To their credit, early setbacks didn’t faze Higgy’s plucky youngsters.
SADDLEWORTH Rangers overcame a determined Oldham St Anne’s side 28-10 in the opening game in this season’s Howarth Timber and Building Supplies John Burke Under-18s Trophy competition.
Tries from Jack Connor and Rhys Waring, with Josh Bradbury kicking a couple of goals, helped Rangers build a 12-4 lead at half-time.
Hosts St Anne’s gave as good as they got and replied through Daniel Dale’s excellent length-of-the-field effort.
The Rangers forwards got on top in the second period, and paved the way for further touch downs from Connor, Waring and Ged Mawdsley.
