HEADING FOR A FALL: Neil Hindley, of Famous King George, slides in to challenge Failsworth Athletic’s Niall Sultan.
FOOTBALL:
Failsworth Athletic 0, Famous King George ‘A’ 5
FAMOUS King George ‘A’ registered a nap hand of goals to book their place in the third round of the Midas Plumbing Oldham Sunday League President’s Trophy.
At a sun-baked Crossley playing fields, George, from the Jack Abbott Premier Division, scored five goals without reply, but the side from a division lower were far from disgraced in defeat.
This match was a re-run of last season’s David Giblin Division One play-off final, which George won on penalties to book their place in the top flight.
There is enough potential in this Failsworth Athletic side — who currently top the Division One table — to suggest they will be joining George next season.
With only a single goal separating the two sides at the break, the second half, it seemed, would be just as tight. But George’s premier pedigree showed as they found the net four times to seal their passage into a competition they have yet to win.
HOLLINWOOD roared to a 6-1 home victory over Breightmet United in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League’s Murray Trophy.
HOLDERS Springhead are through to the second round of the Gilgryst Cup following a 4-1 win at home to Heywood St James.
IN the Lancashire Amateur Shield, a first-half strike from Mike Moss saw Royton Town win 1-0 at Furness Cavaliers.
An under-strength Town outfit had to dig deep into their reserves in testing conditions to earn a tie at Walshaw SC on Saturday week.
The club’s reserve side were beaten 4-3 at Rochdale Sacred Heart in Division Three.
