Bowler Gary Ellis: strongly backs attempt to keep the association going
BOWLS:
CROWN green bowling’s top player is leading the fight to save the Greater Manchester County Association.
Waterloo Handicap winner Gary Ellis, successful in 17 major competitions this season, has called for a meeting next month (still to be fixed).
Tonge star Ellis is one of many bowlers dismayed at the prospect of the association folding.
If it were to do so, the county team in which Ellis plays and its veteran and junior versions would fold with immediate affect.
So, too, would the merit competitions which provide representatives for the All-England events.
Many local leagues affiliated to Greater Manchester County Bowling Association would be forced to find a new parent organisation.
The crisis has arisen following the decision of secretary/treasurer David Williams to resign at next month’s annual meeting — and the management committee’s recommendation to close the organisation.
Ellis launched his appeal for help via crown green bowling website 21up.
He said: “There are two main issues — not enough people to undertake the various jobs, and the association running at a loss.
“The level of interest is effectively going to decide whether Greater Manchester can continue.
Any bowler who thinks he or she can assist should attend the meeting at Chadderton Cot. Details from Mark@prestwichbowls.co.uk
