JUST CHAMPION: Andy Allen (second, left) and Steve Moores are flanked by Crompton and Royton captain Paul W Harrison (left).
CROMPTON and Royton duo Steve Moores and Andy Allen reigned in Spain after being crowned the 2012 Golfdelaluz.com Northern Matchplay pairs champions.
They beat off competition from hundreds of rivals to bag the title at Arcos Gardens Golf and Country Club in Cadiz.
The duo won five local qualifying rounds before clinching victory in two more during the regional final, played at Formby Golf Club earlier in the month, where they qualified for the all-expenses paid trip.
Five-handicapper Moores, who played some exceptional golf during the week, said: “Andy certainly turned on the afterburners for the last three holes.”
Allen added: “We were back and forth because when my form fell off, Steven stepped up and played brilliantly, and then my best form came late on when we needed a final push.
“It was a great feeling and we are both delighted.”
