Crook gets tactics right

THE Morrisons length of the Rochdale Canal fished well for the Saturday open match, with Alan Crook dominating the day with his bread-punch tactics working really well for 7lb 8oz of roach.

Such was the standard of fishing that 5lb only just got you in the money.

That is incredible when you think it’s free fishing on the Rochdale Canal right up to Middleton.

PETE Cuniffe continued his fantastic season with yet another win in the Medlock Bridge AC open match on the Park Lake.

His pole and caster-approach tempted a 4lb carp, eight chub, and some roach and perch weighing in at 15lb 10oz.

He was followed by Fred Prudham whose waggler and maggot accounted for 11lb 4oz of roach and chub.

THE first of the Trabrucco pairs three-match league was fished on the Shipley length of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal where Stalybridge-based Dave Chadwick played a blinder, catching a roach every put-in on five-metre pole and bread punch to weigh in 9lb 7oz.

I fished bread punch at nine and 11 metres, catching plenty of tiny roach for a section-fourth 4lb 3oz, but a big pike that struck four times in my peg and actually caught itself up on my keepnet as it tried to get to the small roach ruined the peg.

Still, I can’t complain as I had loads of bites and an enjoyable day’s fishing.

The next match is on the Mirfield Canal.

LAST week’s pleasing sessions on the Castleton length of the Rochdale Canal seem a long time ago as the cooler temperatures push catches down.

I started on punch down the middle, but didn’t have a bite.

I fed a hemp swim at 11 metres to my right and a caster one at nine metres to my left, but didn’t have a bite on either until I slipped a fluorescent pinkie on the hook.

It dropped in over my punch line and I watched as the float slipped away and a perfect roach of around 8oz came to the net. But that was it!
