NETBALL: OLDHAM Netball Club achieved what Oldham Athletic were unable to do — beat Bury.
The local side overcame a tardy start to record a 61-43 victory in the Northern League clash.
A series of unforced errors allowed Bury to put early points on the board.
But once shooters Alice Travis and Helen Housby found their range, Oldham gained the upper hand.
The pair scored at every opportunity to help their side forge a narrow 11-8 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
Oldham were lethargic, though, and a stern team talk at the first interval spurred them into action.
They stepped up a gear, with Danni Bloomfield, Olivia Jarvis and Gemma McDermott, in defence, never allowing Bury a moment’s peace.
By half-time Oldham had stretched their advantage by 10 goals to 30-20.
Oldham brought on two 15-year-olds, Amy Neild (goal attack), and Abby Tyrell (goal keeper), for the second half.
Tyrell blossomed under the guidance of experienced goal defence Bloomfield, while captain Suzy Chapman took control in attack as Oldham stormed clear.
