Nuttall’s last-gasp winner

Date published: 09 November 2012

SPRINGHEAD’S Adam Nuttall struck in the dying seconds to earn his side a 1-0 win over Lower Hopton in the West Riding Challenge Cup second round.

Lee McAllister’s side were guilty of spurning numerous chances throughout the contest, with the visiting goalkeeper in inspired form all afternoon.

And Nuttall went close to scoring in the first period, only for his header to come back off the cross bar following Richard Bennett’s wicked delivery.

The forward should also have done better when bearing down on goal unchallenged — he fired wide.

Bennett, Paul Stevenson and Nuttall were all denied by the goalkeeper, with Lower Hopton camped deep inside their own half.

Just as the game appeared to be heading into extra-time, Stevenson found Dale Jackman, whose cross was met at the far post by Nuttall for the winner.

In Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League Premier Division, Royton Town narrowly lost out 4-3 at Leigh Athletic.

There was better news for Avro, who won 7-0 at Newton in the Manchester FA Challenge Trophy.
