HUNDREDS of schoolchildren beat the winter blues with a cross-country challenge at Alexandra Park.
Almost 400 youngsters from primary schools in the Hathershaw cluster embraced the Olympic spirit for the race.
The schools involved were St Martin’s, Broadfield, Lyndhurst, Greenhill, St Thomas’s, Holy Rosary, St Patrick’s, St Hugh’s, Roundthorn, Werneth and Alt.
Races were held in year groups with pupils from Year One to Year Six taking part.
St Martin’s were the overall winners followed by runners up Lyndhurst and Holy Rosary, who came third. St Patrick’s won the outstanding team award for effort.
Individual winners included Kyle Tullin from St Martin’s, who won the boys Year Five and Six race while Morgan Schofield, also from St Martin’s, won the girls Year Five and Six race.
Kyle Wolstenholme, from St Martin’s, won the Year Three and Four race and Israel Botembe-Mogea, from St Patrick’s, won the Year One race.
Lorna Philip, assistant principal at Hathershaw College, organised the annual event.
She said: “This year’s event was fantastic and it is getting bigger and better every year. Alexandra Park provided a beautiful venue for the race and there were lots of parents there to cheer the runners on. All the children had a brilliant time.”
