FOOTBALL:
SPRINGHEAD made it eight consecutive wins in all competitions with a 4-1 success at Heywood St James in Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League Premier Division.
Lee McAllister’s men were made to work hard for the three points and the game was in the balance until the 75th minute.
Springhead began brightly, dominating the first half and playing some good football in the process.
But the Heywood goalkeeper was in inspired form, thwarting Richard Bennett, Paul Stevenson and Adam Nuttall.
The away outfit’s persistence did eventually pay off when Nuttall was upended in the box. Stevenson saw his spot- kick pushed onto the post but Scott Owen was on hand to smash home the rebound.
The start of the second period saw Heywood enjoy their best spell of the game.
Royton Town’s dismal run continued with a 3-2 home reverse against Wythenshawe Town.
Wayne Dean and Chris Mackay netted first-half goals for the hosts, who were level at 2-2 at the interval. Phil Haigh’s side have lost five games in a row.
Avro suffered a rare defeat, losing 2-0 at Hindsford.
Division One action saw Hollinwood held to a 0-0 draw at Elton Vale in windy conditions.
Hollinwood goalkeeper Jack Darnborough coped with relentless pressure from early set-pieces and Mat Simpson went close with a header.
The away outfit improved with the wind behind them after the break, and debutant Daniel Clayton caught the eye.
In the Bridgewater Cup, Hollinwood ‘A’ triumphed 5-1 at Leigh Athletic.
