CROMPTON have snapped up a professional for the 2013 Lake Garage CLL season following the shock news of Kevin Bennett’s unavailability.

The South African had signed a contract, but his employers refused to allow him come to England next summer. Ironically, things have worked out well for Crompton — instead they will sign first-choice pro Michael Pote from Cape Town..

The 23-year-old, left-hand batsman and occasional right-arm spinner has signed a contract with Cape Cobras but won’t need him for winter nets - leaving him free to continue his cricket in England.

Described as a star of the future, Pote has made an immediate impact in the first-class game in South Africa.

Representing Western Province under the Cobras umbrella, he has averaged 75.60 in first-class matches and has already scored three centuries. He is regarded as one of the brightest young prospects in South African cricket.

Crompton captain Carl Taylor said: “Michael is excited by the challenge and we expect him to sign soon.”
