OLDHAM RUFC 31, BURNLEY 15
DESPITE being dominated in the scrum by a bigger Burnley pack, Oldham had enough to register an important home victory in North Lancashire Division One.
While they lost most of the set pieces, Oldham’s forwards stood their ground and defended well and their backs, led by Gareth Barber, had the edge.
But this was a game won by the superior goalkicker on the day.
Both sides scored three tries, but Oldham’s Josh Brown converted two and added four penalties, while his opposite number failed with each conversion attempt and two penalties.
Oldham took the lead with a penalty straight from the kick-off, but the next 20 minutes saw the visitors dominate proceedings, culminating in a drive-over try.
Oldham’s response was another Brown penalty followed by a well-worked moved which produced a try.
After a sequence of scrums on the Oldham line, the Burnley pack drove over again and they repeated the feat five minutes before half-time to move 15-13 ahead.
But Oldham still had enough time to score a try of their own before the interval when Brown touched down following good play by winger Liam Armstrong and centre Callum Megram.
Graham scored his second try after the break, Brown converting, and two more penalties stretched the gap as Oldham ran out comfortable winners.
OLDHAM RUFC have lost the services of Adam Waterhouse, who has moved south.
A member of the Oldham pack for the last seven years, Waterhouse came through the youth system and was a fine colts’ team captain.
SATURDAY’S game at Trafford MV has been cancelled as Oldham’s opponents are in a national cup competition.
