Boxing club knocks out gym gear to Ghana after phone call to an old pal
OLDHAM Boxing and Personal Development Club is set to help promising boxers in Africa in their pursuit of glory.
The Derker Street gym closes its doors in February before moving to Victoria House in the heart of Oldham town centre. The new premises on Greaves Street are kitted out with state of the art equipment — meaning much of the old gear is redundant.
So the club will donate the unwanted equipment to upcoming boxers more than 4,500 miles away in Ghana.
Club principal Eric Noi - whose family is from Ghana - enlisted the help of old pal Roy Melvin, whose company regularly does business in Ghana.
On his next trip to West Africa Roy will scout out a suitable charity, good cause or local boxing gym that can use the gloves, weights, bags and associated equipment.
Roy said: “I thought it was a great idea. I spend nearly six months of the year in Ghana and am due to fly out again soon, so I’ll be looking for somewhere suitable.”
