RUGBY: OLDHAM St Anne’s bowed out of the Oldham Amateur League Standard Cup at the first round stage — but Saddleworth Rangers progressed with a comfortable victory.
Saints were beaten 14-8 at home to holders Rochdale Mayfield, while Emerson Jackman’s Rangers side were comfortable 48-16 winners at Folly Lane.
Kiel Lancashire scored two tries and kicked eight goals for Rangers in a fine display. Rangers ran-in eight tries.
The visitors roared into a 24-8 lead at the break, and there was no let up in the second half.
Saints started strongly but Mayfield kept pace and started to pull ahead 10 minutes into the second half, after Saints’ David Best was sent off for alleged abuse to the referee.
A score for centre Nick Hargreaves on the hour settled the outcome.
Rangers and Mayfield join Higginshaw in the semi-finals. The other first-round tie, between Waterhead and Hollinwood, takes place on Saturday, February 23.
