NINE-year-old Amir Hussain continues to improve. A fortnight ago he won the Greater Manchester Schools’ Championship in the under-11s division. He followed that with the under-11s and under-13s titles at the Blackpool Two Star tournament.
TABLE TENNIS:
THREE Oldham teams travelled to Garstang for the final round of the Lancashire and Cheshire Men’s Inter-league matches.
And victory was achieved by all three - showing the current strength of the local league.
Most notable was the success of the thirds, who gained promotion as champions of Division Two.
Starting the day joint top with Preston ‘A’, the team of Paul King, Nathan Buckley and Rob Belli knew victories in at least two of their three matches would guarantee promotion.
Playing title rivals Preston ‘A’ first, Oldham were fired up and romped to an impressive 5-1 win.
Further 5-1 victories followed over Trafford ‘A’ and Glossop ‘A’.
The thirds now join their second team in Division One for the 2013-14 season.
The firsts retained their Premier Division status following impressive displays, clinching third place out of eight.
They were in the daunting position of 3-1 down with two left to play, but McLean and Pinter battled through to get a hard-fought draw.
Their other game was a 4-2 loss against eventual Premier Division champions Chester and Ellesmere Port.
A 3-3 draw with Halifax was enough to see Oldham’s second team of Colin Boardman, Dave Buckley and a rotation of third team players to stay in Division One.
