Action at the closed championships.
TABLE TENNIS: YORKSHIREMAN Darren Lindley had to fight off the challenge of young pretender James Chappell on his way to retaining the senior individual title at the Oldham Closed Table Tennis Championships.
The Saddleworth CC ace defeated Andy Jackson in straight games — 12-10, 12-10, 11-6 — in the final at Radclyffe Athletics Centre.
Lindley, from Barnsley, was in imperious form on the day, and had overcome Chappell 11-5, 11-8, 11-6 in the last four.
Jackson’s victim in his semi-final was the experienced Barry Elliott, who was vanquished 11-8, 11-7, 11-7.
Glodwick player Jackson did gain a semblance of revenge in the doubles final.
DENIED
Teaming up with Mark Ramsbottom, he denied Lindley and Khamal Hussain 11-4, 11-5, 8-11, 11-9.
The singles section, won by Lindley, attracted a full entry of 80 competitors, while 44 lined-up in the veterans category.
And victory went to Elliott, who beat three-time winner Ramsbottom 11-9, 11-4, 12-10.
Jon DePledge won the first Oldham over-60s title after defeating Tommy Ryan 11-6, 11-7, 10-12, 11-9 in the final.
While Chappell (14) missed out in the senior division, he went one better in the juniors.
Facing another promising young talent in Amir Hussain (nine) in the final, he won 11-4, 11-5, 13-11.
