RUGBY:

OLDHAM St Anne’s ‘A’ recovered from a 16-4 deficit at half-time to record a thrilling last-minute 26-24 victory at Ince Rose Bridge ‘A’ in Division Three of the North West Men’s League.

Danny Wright scored the points-clinching try as the Higginshaw Road outfit made the perfect start to the season.

Saints appeared down and out at the break.

The Wigan side notched three tries and a couple of goals, while the visitors responded with a Luke Makin touch down.

Ince Rose Bridge extended their lead with a penalty after the resumption, but Saints refused to lie down.

Second-row forward Martin Ryan bagged a brace and Callum Deakin went in. Martyn Swaine also kicked a couple of goals to put Saints ahead for the first time in the game.

However, Ince Rose Bridge hit back with a penalty and a one-pointer to regain the lead.

Saints had the last laugh, though, with Wright carrying three defenders over the line and Swaine adding the extras.
