THERE have been some real highs at Stamford for Dave Allen, and now the 58-year-old 11-handicapper is relishing the prospect of spending a year as the club’s captain.
Single man Allen, from Tintwistle, has been a member for 25 years, and during that time he has treasured some proud successes on the course — and seen a lot of the world.
He said: “I have enjoyed lots of good times over the last 25 years. I’ve won a few majors and quite a lot of medal competitions.
“I guess the highlight came in 1997 when I won the Wood Bowl, though securing a doubles major with partner Barry Sidebottom was also a big moment.
“In fact being a member of this great club has taken me far and wide.
“I’ve played in Turkey, Wales, Scotland and Ireland — places I probably wouldn’t have otherwise visited.
“It’s going to be a real pleasure for me captain the club.”
Allen was a firefighter for 30 years before retirement, meaning he now gets down to play a round three or four times a week.
