Wife prepared to take the plunge

Date published: 29 March 2013

SUCH is the commitment to new Saddleworth captain Gary Simpson’s charity for 2013 that his wife has pledged to throw herself out of an aeroplane in a bid to raise funds.

Willow Wood Hospice in Ashton-under-Lyne, where his father died, will be Gary’s beneficiary during his year as captain.

He has his own fund-raising events planned — including a year-long golf challenge against fellow members, culminating in a prize draw — but wife Lynda has signed up for a parachute jump along with at least 12 of her friends.

Such commitment will also be in evidence in Gary’s year-long efforts at Saddleworth.

He said: “My aim is basically to promote the golf club, including the social side and events held there — and to ensure that I get through the year unscathed!”

The five-handicapper joined the club as a nine-year-old and, at the age of 45, is now in his 37th year.

Following in his footsteps is his 21-year-old son Ben, who plays off four. Gary’s other son, Kiel (24) prefers angling.

A projects manager for a retail and construction company in Delph, Gary has lived in Carrbrook, Stalybridge, since he and Lynda were married 25 years ago.

He is satisfied with the current membership level at Saddleworth, but said there is room for new faces.
