TABLE TENNIS: UPPERMILL ‘C’ produced an impressive display to upset title-chasing Deaf Club ‘C’ in Division Five of the Oldham Table Tennis League.
The team in eighth spot recorded a 6-4 win, thanks to the efforts of Jim Bradbury (hat-trick), Ali Mirza and Christopher Smith. Prakash Bhojani and Ron Tench, with two apiece, replied for Deaf Club.
Pollards ‘C’ pocketed some valuable points with a 9-1 win at home to St Mathews.
It was their first victory since the start of January. Harry Barnes denied the hosts a whitewash by claiming the sixth set.
Gary Kershaw and Geoffrey Beard notched maximums for Pollards.
In Division One, Rosehill ended a run of six straight defeats with a 6-4 success at home to Hyde’s YMCA ‘A’ team.
A set each for Ken Ward and Stephen Hilton put the visitors in the driving seat before Warwick Francis and Simon Collins, grabbing his second of the night, regained the initiative for Rosehill.
A second point each for Ward and Hilton saw the pendulum swing once again in Hyde’s favour.
However, a set for Phillip Ashworth and a third for Collins — the pair also hooked up in the doubles — ended Rosehill’s winless sequence.
Werneth ‘B’ claimed their first win since November with an 8-2 triumph at home to Honeywell ‘B’.
The match was level after four sets courtesy of Thomas Ryan’s double for Honeywell, which cancelled out points for Karen Hill and Mick Pellowe.
Werneth then cranked it up a gear, with David Cheetham and Hill both
finishing with doubles, while a second maximum of the campaign for Pellowe saw the away side make it two weeks unbeaten for the first time this season.
