New Crompton and Royton GC captain Peter Meggison
GOLF: A MEMBER at Crompton and Royton for almost 15 years, Peter Meggison has described how ‘privileged’ he feels at being club captain for 2013.
Local man Meggison, who plays off a handicap of 11, said: “I can’t say how much of an honour it is to have been asked to take over. I’m looking forward to helping to push the club forward in these difficult times.
“It is a lovely golf club and I usually try to get down to play at least two or three times a week in the summer months, but at the end of the day it is also a business.
“The membership numbers are just about holding up, but with such a massive recession on at present, the club does need people to give it a push.”
The new captain has enjoyed success in the past at Crompton and Royton.
Six years ago Meggison won the President’s Trophy in some style, then in 2011 he partnered Noreen Nicholson to success in a mixed doubles competition.
His chosen charity is Dr Kershaw’s Hospice, and there are numerous fund-raising events planned between now and the end of the year.
Meggison enjoyed his drive-in ceremony at the High Barn club, when despite the miserable weather, there was an excellent turnout.
He added: “We had around 50 players involved. It was great to see so many people enjoy the day despite the conditions.”
