FIGHTING FIT . . . Werneth captain James Buckley.
GOLF:
NEW Werneth captain James Buckley (30) is hoping to cap a recent fitness drive in style with a spectacular charity day in the summer.
Self-employed joiner Buckley, a six-handicapper, has nominated Dr Kershaw’s Hospice as his chosen charity and the highlight of his effort will come in June with a plan to play 100 holes in a day across five different clubs: Werneth, Brookdale, Crompton and Royton, Oldham and Saddleworth.
Buckley said: “I’m just waiting for confirmation from Brookdale, but all being well I’ll get through the 100 holes and raise lots of money for the hospice. I’m really looking forward to going for it.”
Also planned at the Green Lane club is a fun day - featuring an 18-hole competition with a shotgun start, with all players encouraged to wear fancy dress!
It’s set to be a proud year for the single man, who has been a club member since he was 13 and has lived at the course for the last 12 years - his mother is club stewardess.
He boasts a best-ever gross round of 65 (three under).
“It’s about five years since I shot my 65,” he said. “But to be honest, I haven’t really got anywhere near that since. It would be nice to get back to that kind of standard again.”
