Waiting game for Oddies

GETTING THEIR KICKS . . . Oddies' Carlton Brierley (orange shirt) and Legends' David Laria.
Oddies Athletic 3, Legends Bar 4
ODDIES Athletic wrapped up their final fixture in the Midas Plumbing Oldham Sunday League Jack Abbott Premier Division and must now sweat on the outcome of other results at the foot of the table.
Second from bottom in the table with a solitary win and three draws all season, Athletic will be watching closely the fortunes of Famous King George 'A', the bottom-placed side three points behind them but who, crucially, have four games in hand.
It’s been a dismal campaign for Athletic, but they came close to snatching a draw against title-chasing Legends Bar on the Royton and Crompton 3G.
Legends, boasting a wealth of proven experience in Sunday league football, were, perhaps unsurprisingly, three goals to the good at half-time.
It was 4-0 to Legends five minutes after the restart and it seemed at that stage that Athletic were consigned to defeat. But, inspired by a brace from David Simms, Athletic roared back with three goals in an amazing 10-minute spell which had Legends rocking.
And with what was almost the final kick of the match, Athletic centre-back Michael Hill watched in despair as his hurried drive sailed over the crossbar when, arguably, a player with more goalscoring experience might have done better.
