GOLF:
THE invitation day sequence for the five local clubs got off to a spectacular start at Werneth when Saddleworth captain Gary Simpson and Oldham past captain Barry Lees blasted an amazing 49 points.
That was four better than the field in the betterball Stableford format as they fired nine birdies — including three in a row from the 10th — and came home with 26 points for the back nine.
“We had an incredible day, chipping in, long putts, the lot,” said Gary.
THE 40th season of the Oldham Golf League gets under way next month and the 12 clubs held their annual meeting at Ashton which included the draw for the cups.
‘A’ Cup first round: Stamford v Saddleworth at Dukinfield; Dukinfield v Brookdale at Oldham; Denton v C&R at North Manchester; Fairfield v Oldham at Crompton and Royton. Byes: Ashton, Blackley, North Manchester, Werneth.
‘B’ Cup first round: Werneth v Brookdale at Stamford; Oldham v Fairfield at Brookdale; North Manchester v Blackley at Fairfield; Saddleworth v Dukinfield at Ashton. Byes: Ashton, Crompton and Royton, Denton and Stamford. All first-round ties will be played from May 27.
