CRICKET: IT’S been a winter of few changes at Delph and Dobcross as the Huddersfield Road outfit will look to build on last season’s cup heroics and fifth-place in the Drakes Huddersfield League.
Under the guidance of club stalwart and captain Grant Jones, Delph get their Premier Division campaign under way tomorrow with an intriguing home game against Shelley, who finished sixth.
Weighing up the prospects, Jones said:
“It looks like almost every team has strengthened over the close season.
“It’s going to be a strong league. We did well last year though. “We have some really good young players coming through the ranks and we’ll be putting faith in some of them before the end of September.”
Joining Delph is 20-year-old all-rounder Steve Broadbent from Austerlands, but the club will be without Adnan Ghaus and veteran Bruce Cruse – who topped Delph’s batting averages last season and will run the second team.
Following tomorrow’s league opener, Delph entertain Central Yorkshire League side New Farnley on Sunday in the Heavy Woollen Cup.
Captain: Grant Jones
Professional: Kevin Hook (Zimbabwe)
Last season: 5th
SADDLEWORTH have the unenviable task of playing their first game against reigning champions Bamford Fieldhouse in the Versasteel Saddleworth and District Cricket League on Sunday.
The visitors to Well-i-hole swept aside Highfield, from the Liverpool Competition, by 10 wickets last weekend
