Springhead win sets up derby final cracker

FOOTBALL: SPRINGHEAD marched into their second successive Manchester League Gilgryst Cup final thanks to a ruthless 5-1 last-four victory at Monton.

The cracking result sets up a tasty derby showpiece against Avro at Hyde FC on May 10 (7.45pm).

Monton opened brightly and were were awarded a penalty after 20 minutes for handling in the box.

But the spot-kick was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Gareth Coombe.

That seemed to kick-start Springhead and Paul Stevenson smashed home from Dale Jackman’s corner.

The lead was doubled on half-time as Adam Nuttall’s through-ball found Adam Monks, who raced clear before calmly slotting past the goalkeeper.

The game was as good as over only a minute after the restart when Stevenson spotted the goalkeeper off his line and chipped him superbly from 30 yards.

Monton gave themselves a glimmer of hope after 70 minutes when poor marking saw their forward head in.

That was short-lived though, as sub Josh Walker headed home Stevenson’s cross.

The icing on the cake was provided five minutes from time when Stevenson sealed his hat-trick as he headed home Jackman’s cross.

In the Bridgewater League Cup last four, Chadderton ‘A’ won 2-1 at home to Elton Vale after extra-time and they will now play local rivals Hollinwood ‘A’, who triumphed 2-0 at home to local rivals Springhead.

SANTOS slipped to a hugely disappointing 3-1 home Lancashire and Cheshire League Division One defeat against Moston Brook.
Three points are still needed from two remaining games to erase the threat of relegation.

Moston Brook took the lead after just five minutes, then, with the help of a kind rebound, doubled their advantage.

A quick Moston break then paved the way for a third goal from close range.

The hosts were given hope just before the break when they were awarded a penalty for a push on Roufaye Aidari. Keith Kurpass stepped up and saw his initial effort saved, but got lucky with the rebound and smashed the ball home.

The second half was much better for Santos, but they couldn’t find a finishing touch in front of goal.
