FOOTBALL: GOALLESS draws are quite rare in amateur football yet Uppermill and Hepworth United managed one at Greenfield Paper Mill in the First Division of the Huddersfield and District League.
Despite the scoreline this wasn’t a dour encounter - though defences dominated.
Uppermill's unbeaten record in the league – Simon Tait's side has dropped just four points all season – was preserved and the title is very much in sight.
Uppermill's three best chances fell to Lee Rainford, Kristian Ventress and Bobby Greenwood, while goalkeeper Aaron Rowbotham made a couple of fine stops to deny Hepworth.
A first-ever title success for Uppermill would certainly boost the club's desire to move into the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League for next season.
Tait added: "We are looking to step up and with a good squad of players. First of all, though, there are some crucial games coming up in the Huddersfield League and we need to concentrate on that."
Uppermill took a step closer to the title when goals from Andrew Pheby (two) and Kristian Ventress earned them a 3-2 victory at home to Newsome on Tuesday.
FOOTBALL: HEYSIDE slid out of the Huddersfield FA Challenge Cup thanks to a 3-1 defeat against West Riding Premier League outfit Marsden.
Though Heyside enjoyed the better of the early exchanges, two goals in five minutes before half-time gave the visitors a mountain to climb.
Heyside opened the second period well and Jason Titterington reduced the deficit.
The visitors missed two gilt-edged chances as they pushed for an equaliser, and were punished when Marsden broke away and scored to make it 3-1 in stoppage-time.
Heyside lost a Division Two clash 1-0 at Meltham Athletic on Tuesday.
