RUGBY:
HAT-TRICKS by Niall Collins, Mick Fogerty and substitute Michael Cadd gave Oldham St Anne’s an emphatic 74-28 win over Stanningley in Division Two of the National Conference League.
The South Leeds side drew first blood at Higginshaw Road.
Both teams were reduced to 12 men when Smithson and Saints’ Jason Best were sent to the touchline to cool down for 10 minutes after a disagreement in the tackle.
Saints responded with David Best sending out a long pass for centre Fogerty to stroll in at the side of the posts. Kiel Lancashire added the conversion to bring the scores level.
Midway through the first half, Lancashire and Fogerty combined down the left to put in Lee Forsyth. The full-back returned the compliment for Lancashire to grab his first try and added both goals for an 18-6 lead.
The momentum was with Saints, and either side of the half-hour mark, Fogerty and Collins scored unconverted tries.
From the restart, Stanningley allowed the ball to bounce and substitute Cadd, with his first touch, crashed over. Lancashire added the first of seven successful conversions in the second period.
Kent again crossed for a Smithson goaled-try, before Lancashire scored his second of the game after a brilliant break from Chris Carter.
Collins then collected another kick from the Saints stand-off for his brace before landing his hat-trick, which was interspersed by two more tries for Cadd.
Tom Wilson and Alistair Riley completed the Yorkshire side’s tries, with Smithson landing a goal.
