EYES ON THE BALL: Werneth’s Matt Taylor plays a straight drive in Sunday’s derby encounter against Royton.
CRICKET:
SATURDAY was a red letter day on the local cricket scene with wins for all four of our Lake Garage CLL teams.
Action in the CLL Championship saw Werneth and Royton beat Unsworth and Monton and Weaste at home, and Crompton and Oldham win at Radcliffe and Ashton respectively.
The latter pair were gaining their first victories of the season — and Crompton’s was Taylor-made.
Danny Taylor snaffled five for 47 as Radcliffe were bowled out for 137 by Crompton, despite 57 from Shaun Gibson.
Captain Carl Taylor completed the job by making an unbeaten 50 as Crompton reached their target for the loss of five wickets. Radcliffe pro Michael Burns took four for 47.
New-look Oldham were much too strong for Ashton at Rayner Lane.
Abdul Hameed hit 49 as Oldham were dismissed for 176 after taking first guard, home paid man Naveed Ghaney picking up four for 80.
Ashton were up against it and it was little surprise that a decent Oldham bowling unit dismissed them for a meagre 75.
Royton professional Ben Dunk made a spectacular debut for his team after a delay in coming to England following visa problems.
The Australian hit an unbeaten 108-ball 100 as the Paddock outfit successfully chased down Monton and Weaste’s 240 for eight.
Dunk, who hit 11 fours and a six, was given fine support by Chris Hutchinson (65 not out off 62 balls) and Liam Mason (40) as Royton raced to 241 for two.
Werneth stayed at the top of the table, at least for 24 hours, thanks to their comfortable five-wicket defeat of Unsworth at the Coppice.
