Heyside win Twenty20 final
HEYSIDE treated a large crowd with two clinical displays to clinch the Twenty20 title at Micklehurst CC’s Castle Lane ground yesterday.
There were few concerns for the supporters from Little Hey Street as first Steven Firth, with 67 from 30 balls, ended Friarmere’s hopes in the remaining semi-final, held over from last season because of the weather, and then John Selby and Gerrie Snyman tore into the Hollinwood attack in the final.
Heyside got their hands on the trophy with 3.2 overs and eight wickets to spare — a canter in Twenty20 terms.
Professional Snyman, who struck his first century in the Saddleworth and District Cricket League at the same venue 12 months ago, smashed Arshad Mahmood for four sixes in the seventh over. He was finally caught on the boundary off skipper Shakeel Saddique for 39, prompting wild celebrations among the Hollinwood players.
That was as good as it got for the Lime Lane men, though, as Selby and stand-in captain Nick Campbell steered Heyside, beaten finalists in 2011, to an emphatic victory.
Hollinwood’s total of 138 was largely due to the efforts of fifth-wicket pair of Kashif Khan (30) and Mahmood (35), who put on 51 in 5.1 overs, and hit two sixes apiece.
Neither was able to stick around long enough to push their side towards a mark of 160, which was necessary on a decent track and good outfield.
Selby, on the other hand, carried his bat for exactly 50. He brought up his half-century with a match-winning six — the third of his innings — while Campbell was unbeaten on 26.
