GOLF:
STAMFORD has been a busy venue in recent weeks – and leading the celebrations at the course was Geoff Warren.
Playing in a seniors match against New Mills, Geoff (right) achieved a hole-in-one at the sixth hole with his nine wood.
Meanwhile, European Tour professional Matthew Nixon graced the Mark Smith Classic which proved a great success.
The winning team was club captain Dave Allen, Mike Dean, Ian Horrocks and Colin Clarke, who came in with 85 points and received prizes to the value of £110 each.
Second, after a card play-off, were Keith Coxon, Guy Hall John Stubbs and Ian Trow (84), who collected worth £85 each.
Nixon was third alongside his father Barry, professional’s father Tony Smith and Mike Hewitt, who amassed 84 points for prizes worth £70.
OLDHAM have been forced to withdraw from the Oldham and District Golf League’s ‘B’ section.
On the eve of the league’s 40th season, which begins this week, the Lees New Road club – which has been struggling for players – has decided to amalgamate its two squads to ensure they fulfil fixtures with an ‘A’ team.
“We are disappointed that this has happened so late in the build-up to the new season,” said ODGL chairman John Walsh. The space left by Oldham ‘B’ in the West section will now become a free date.
GAIL Rowbotham won Werneth’s first major of the season, the Marie Hufton Salver, with a Stableford score of 39 points.
Marilyn Griffin (36) prevailed in a card play-off for second, while the first division, first sweep was won by Madge Griffiths (36) and second sweep by Lisa Shea (31).
The second division sweep was shared by Sue Green and Marianne Pickford with 30 points.
