McAllister eyes Gilgryst Cup win double

FOOTBALL:

IT is seven years since Lee McAllister joined Springhead as joint manager — and he believes the club is stronger than ever.

The Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League outfit is riding in fourth place in the Premier Division, reached the semi-final of the County Cup this season, and tonight bids to retain the Gilgryst Cup as the team plays local rival Avro in the final at Hyde FC’s Ewen Fields ground (7.45pm).

McAllister, who manages Springhead’s first-team alongside Andy Revill, said: “Whatever happens tonight it will have been another very successful season for us. If we can win the Gilgryst Cup again that would be a really terrific achievement.

“It’s going to be tough against Avro, but if we can repeat the spirit we showed in last year’s final then hopefully we’ll be right in there with a shout.”

McAllister and Revill will have a near full-strength squad to choose from. The only player definitely out will be last season’s player of the year and vice-captain Scott Owen, who has struggled with injury all season.

Last weekend Springhead drew 3-3 at Old Alts, while on Wednesday night they wrapped up their 2012-13 league campaign with a 3-1 derby defeat at Royton Town. Avro warmed up for tonight’s cup final with an excellent 4-1 win at AFC Monton.
