RUGBY LEAGUE:
EMMERSON Jackman had a piece of good news this week — and he wants to cap it off with some more tomorrow.
Jackman’s nephew Kyle Eastmond was selected for England rugby union’s summer tour of South America on Wednesday.
That put a big smile on the face of the Saddleworth Rangers coach and he is hoping to be continue the feelgood factor after his side’s visit to East Leeds in Division One of the National Conference League.
Rangers, despite and experienced squad, are stuck in the bottom three - not that Jackman is currently too concerned
He said: “We’ve played half-a-dozen games and there are 18 to go. Having said that, it would be nice to get another win under our belts.
“We were a bit unlucky in our last game at Millom. There were only four points in it and we were held up over the line three times.”
Winger Marlon Miller scored both Rangers’ tries on that day, but he was also spiked in the calf by a corner flag and will miss tomorrow’s match. Also absent are second row Dave Newton, out for up to six weeks after undergoing surgery, and Danny Turner. Turner’s place at centre is taken by Mark Brocklehurst, with Chris Garforth in at scrum-half.
OLDHAM St Anne’s are gearing up for a busy few days. Chris Deakin’s in-form men, who put 73 points on the board at home to Stanningley in their most recent NCL Division Two clash, go to Oulton Raiders tomorrow in round one of the Challenge Trophy (2.30pm). They then host Leigh East on Tuesday in a rearranged league game (7.30pm).
“I’d like to do well in the trophy, but I’ve also got an eye on the midweek game.” said Deakin, who has serious doubts over Nathan Jewitt (dead leg), John Deakin (thigh) and Luke Makin (knee).
WATERHEAD, going along nicely in Division One of the NCL, are also in Challenge Trophy action tomorrow. They host Egremont Rangers, who are riding high in the Premier Division.
