FRESH from his demolition job on the Hollinwood bowling attack in the Twenty20 Cup final on Bank Holiday Monday, John Selby was at it again as he helped leaders Heyside to victory in the Versasteel Saddleworth and District Cricket League.
The opening batsman struck 55 and, aided by contributions from skipper Ben Holt and professional Gerrie Snyman – both unbeaten on 58 - the lads from Little Hey Street beat Moorside by nine wickets.
Akin to the other four games which went ahead in Division One – soggy grounds claimed fixtures at Stayley and Uppermill – the contest was shortened because of a rain-delayed start.
Faced with 23 overs, visitors Moorside raced to 179 for four. Overseas amateur Francois Mostert and Danny Anchor hit 44 and 42 respectively. It was a good effort, but not good enough as the home side raced across the line with 3.4 overs to spare.
Heyside are 12 points clear of second-placed Austerlands, who had a comfortable afternoon at Micklehurst.
Adam Young’s men made 189 for five from their 22 overs, before dismissing the hosts for a meagre 53. Pro Imran Aslam claimed four for 21.
Abdul Khan, with 70, laid the foundations for Hollinwood’s defeat of Droylsden at Lime Lane.
Initially requiring 148 in 26 overs, a rain break left the visitors from Oakfield needing 132 from 22 overs.
They got to 113 with eight wickets down. Shakir Hussain snapped up four of them for 21 runs.
Greenfield didn’t hang about against a Glodwick side whose captain Nigel Stock was at Wembley for the FA Cup final.
In 32 overs, the home team racked up 217 for nine, with Alex Peters making 58.
An interruption for rain meant Glodwick required 192 from 27 overs.
They fell some way short on 165 for nine.
Bamford’s wet-weather frustration at Uppermill saw the reigning champions drop to fifth in the table.
