11-man Waterhead defeated

MICK Diveney could be facing a long spell on the sidelines after being sent off in Waterhead’s Conference Challenge Trophy defeat.

The half-back, who kicked four goals in the 48-24 loss to Egremont Rangers, was given his marching orders for verbal abuse of the referee.

It left Waterhead to complete the remainder of the tie with 11 players as winger Tom McMullen, on the day of his 21st birthday, was shown a red card in the first half for fighting.

“The authorities don’t look too kindly on that kind of dismissal - I can see it being between six and eight games,” said coach Andy Sands.

“He has asked for a personal hearing and I will go as well, but what he did was unacceptable.”

Waterhead were without injured Carl Sneyd (knee) and Danny Knight (ribs), while Matt Fogarty and Alan Williamson were unavailable.

Dale Lowe (two), Craig Highton and Ashley Wildman touched down for Waterhead.

Rangers’ try-scorers were Jame McDonald (two) — he also added four goals — Daniel Telford, Paul Corkhill, Callum Rolandson, Anthony Leak, Leon Crellin, Jack Stainton and Richard Farrer. Matthew Bewsher notched two conversions.

AFTER dropping out of the Challenge Trophy, Oldham St Anne’s must pick themselves up for tonight’s National Conference League Division Two clash at home to Leigh East (kick-off 7.30pm).

Chris Deakin’s side were beaten 48-8 at Oulton Raiders on Saturday, despite a decent show against the Division One high-flyers.
