GOLF:
STAMFORD made a sensational start to the new Oldham and District Golf League season with both teams winning their opening matches 8-0.
Their ‘A’ team — packed with experienced players and also including professional Mark Smith — were too strong for Chris Lakner’s Saddleworth men on their own Huddersfield Road course.
But the ‘B’ team’s whitewash success at Saddleworth’s Ladcastle Road club was impressive with two of the wins sealed on the final green.
Werneth got their ‘A’ team season off to a fine start when they claimed a 4-4 draw at reigning champions North Manchester.
Les Dooley and Jack Suttie combined to win 5&4, but it was Adam Rowbotham and Liam Dwayre who came from two down with six to play to win 2&1 which really changed the complexion of the result.
In the ‘B’ League, West Division, Crompton and Royton will have been delighted with a prized away win after claiming a 5-3 victory over Blackley.
