TITLE CHANCE . . . Danny Wright.
BOXING: LOCAL boxer Danny Wright will bid to become a National Junior ABA champion in Mansfield this weekend.
The Failsworth ace convincingly saw off former national champion Drew Brown in Birmingham in their 63kg-category semi-final clash.
Four out of the five judges gave the decision to Wright after three barnstorming rounds. His trainer at the Boarshaw Gym, Ben Lancaster, is hoping for a repeat in the final against two-time national champion Jordan Flynn.
Lancaster said: “Danny was io great form and should have won 5-0.
“It’s going to be tough against Flynn: he’s got a great record. We’re all confident Danny can bring home the title though. He’s shown he’s got what it takes so far.”
There was frustration for Oldham’s Perry King as he left the National Junior ABA semi-finals last weekend.
Taking on tough Lenny Evans over four rounds in Birmingham, the 18 year old lost in the 63.5kg category fight as three of the five ringside judges gave the decision to his Shrewsbury-based opponent.
King said: “I boxed dreadfully so I can’t really whinge too much.
King will next compete in the Club for Young People (CYP) Championships in October.
