OLDHAM has a new National Junior ABA champion: Failsworth’s Danny Wright.
The 18-year-old prospect from the Boarshaw gym secured his dream title in Mansfield in a convincing victory over Jordan Flynn from East London’s famous Repton club.
Competing over three, two-minute rounds, Wright secured a unanimous decision.
His trainer at Boarshaw, Ben Lancaster, was overjoyed. It was the first national ABA win for the club since Oldham’s Ronnie Heffron two years ago.
Lancaster said: “We’re all over the moon for Danny. He was awesome. Flynn was a really tough opponent, and from one of the best and most famous amateur clubs in the country.
“Danny edged the first round but really started to put the pressure on in the second. He was switching his attack brilliantly and in the final round he took command. We’re just so proud of Danny. He's worked so hard for this title.”
Wright’s immediate future is an England training camp this weekend. After that, Lancaster hopes he will earn an England call-up for the tri-nations tournament against Scotland and Wales.
